Study Documents Health Woes Associated With Trade Center
September 2004
Those who worked the World Trade Center disaster have additional scientific backup for their reports of health problems. A study in the May issue of Environmental Health Perspectives concludes that “environmental exposures after the WTC disaster were associated with significant adverse effects on health.” Among these, researchers from the Mount Sinai School of Medicine determined, were bronchial hyperreactivity, persistent cough and increased risk of asthma from the highly alkaline WTC dust. The dust was found to contain pulverized cement, glass fibers, asbestos, lead and dioxins. Study authors recommended continuing followup to monitor long-term effects.
