Big Things, Small Packages, No Limits

Older EMS equipment was big and bulky, not because it was better for saving lives, but because the technology didn’t yet exist to make it smaller. But now it’s the 21st century – cell phones double for high-powered computers that fit in the palm of our hand, and EMS equipment can be just as powerful, if not more so, without being big and bulky.

That’s largely what drew the Wausau (WI) Fire Department to the ZOLL X Series Monitor/Defibrillator, according to EMS Division Chief Josh Finke. “We’ve had the X series in use for about 8 months now, and the major features that drew us toward it were quite simply the size and weight of the machine.”

The new ZOLL X Series Monitor/Defibrillator is about half the size and weight of competitive full-feature monitor/defibrillators, yet much more powerful. Weighing less than 12 pounds, the X Series is compact without compromise in capability, performance or display size. This monitor/defibrillator combines the clinically superior therapeutic capabilities of ZOLL defibrillation, pacing and CPR assistance with advanced monitoring parameters. And because the X Series can transmit 12-leads to any receiving hospital an EMS system may work with, even if the hospital doesn’t use a ZOLL system, it has every advanced monitoring and communication capability required by EMS providers.

Finke says Wausau Fire Department uses the monitors daily on nearly every patient, from general cardiac monitoring and taking blood pressures to cardiac arrest patients. They regularly transmit 12-leads from their ZOLL monitors into the hospitals’ LifeNet System.

And he appreciates the combination of size and power the X Series offers. “The biggest things our paramedics liked about it were the weight of the machine and the ability to do the same procedures while using a lighter unit.”
