N.C. Paramedic Struck, Loses Legs at Accident Scene
Update: As of 10PM Thursday, the unidentified paramedic remained in critical condition
CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- A Charlotte area paramedic lost both his legs after he was struck by an 18-wheeler, a Mecklenburg County fire official has confirmed.
The accident happened on I-77 southbound near Davidson just before 2:30 p.m.
The paramedic was taken by ground to Lake Norman Regional Hospital where he is being airlifted to Carolinas Medical Center.
The paramedic was providing help at an accident scene on the side of the road near the guardrail when the truck hit him.
There's no word on any other injuries.
The southbound lane of I-77 at the Davidson exit (exit 30) has been shut down. It is expected to remain closed for at least two hours while authorities investigate the accident. I-77 north is open but is moving slowly.
Traffic is being diverted onto Statesville Road and Highway 115
