New York Hospitals Brace for Downsizing

November 20, 2006 -- More than a dozen New York hospitals are on life support and bracing for doomsday as state officials put the final touches on a hit list of facilities that they will force to close, shrink or merge, according to a published report.

The hospitals are in every borough but Staten Island, Crain's reports today.

The only city-owned hospital on the list is Metropolitan in Manhattan, but sources said it's very unlikely that one will close.

The New York State Health Care Commission for the 21st Century - the hospital closing commission - will release its downsizing list next week.
