Three Injured When Kansas Car Hits Ambulance
May 07--A car collided with an ambulance returning to its station early Monday morning, sending both paramedics to the hospital.
The collision occurred at 3:55 a.m. at Lincoln and Hillside, Sedgwick County sheriff's Capt. Annette Haga said. The ambulance was traveling east on Lincoln returning to its station when a 25-year-old man driving a Ford Taurus south on Hillside ran a red light and struck the ambulance.
The impact spun the ambulance around, Haga said. When the ambulance hit a curb, it rolled onto its side.
"One member of the crew was trapped for a little while before they were able to get him out," Haga said.
The force of the collision caused the car to careen into a business, Paul's Radiator Service, at 902 S. Hillside, a Sedgwick County dispatch supervisor said.
The two male paramedics, ages 50 and 30, were taken to Via Christi Hospital on St. Francis for treatment. The older paramedic has since been released. The 25-year-old man driving the car was taken to Wesley Medical Center.
"We're looking into the possibility that alcohol may be involved" as a factor in the collision, Haga said.
The intersection was open again for traffic in time for the morning commute.
