A 33-year-old Marine City man was seriously injured Monday morning after hitting an ambulance in St. Clair County.
Deputies with the St. Clair County Sheriff’s Office were dispatched shortly before 5 a.m. Monday, Jan. 27 to River Road just north of Hathaway Road in East China Township for a report of a head-on crash.
When they arrived, deputies learned a 2003 GMC Envoy was headed northbound on River Road, crossed over the center line, and hit the ambulance headed southbound.
The driver of the Envoy had to be extricated from the vehicle by members of the St. Clair Fire Department. He was the only person in the vehicle.
He was transported by a Tri-Hospital Ambulance to Ascension River District Hospital in East China Township.
There were three people in the ambulance—the 33-year-old man Macomb Township man who was driving, a 24-year-old female paramedic in the jump seat in the rear of the unit and a 67-year-old Port Huron Township woman who was being transported.
The EMS workers sustained minor injuries. The woman who was being transported on a gurney in the ambulance told deputies that she was not injured.
The St. Clair County Sheriff’s Office Accident Investigation Unit was called to the scene of the crash, which remains under investigation.
