Medisafe Brings Interoperable Med Lists to EHRs

PR Newswire

WASHINGTON, Dec. 13, 2016 /PRNewswire/ -- Medisafe, the leading personalized medication management platform with almost three and a half million patient and caregiver registered users, announced today that, as part of an initiative led by the Department of Health and Human Services' Office of the National Coordinator for Health Information Technology (ONC), it successfully demonstrated medication list functionality with electronic health records (EHRs) during a live groundbreaking proof-of-concept demo at the annual Connected Health Conference in Washington D.C. Patients will now be able to access their medication lists from multiple provider locations using the Medisafe app in a fully secure HIPAA-compliant environment.

The live app demo showed the promise of Fast Healthcare Interoperability Resources (FHIR), a framework of standards for healthcare data, authorization, and UI integration that seeks integrate medical apps into diverse EHR systems at the point of care. Data from both Cerner Corporation and Epic Systems, two of the largest electronic health record (EHR) vendors in the U.S., was successfully integrated into the Medisafe app using FHIR, thereby enabling patients to pull a consolidated list of their medications from different locations (i.e. hospitals, doctors' offices, clinics) in one place.

The event also featured a panel discussion with patients and healthcare providers focused on how these FHIR-based solutions could be rolled out in 2017 to allow consumers to view their medication information across different hospital systems or doctor's offices that use different EHR systems in one location.
