OTC Pain Relief Patches Recalled

Lidocaine and menthol patches sold under several different names are being voluntarily recalled by Wuhan Bingbing Pharmaceutical Co. Ltd., according to the June 3, 2020, US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) Enforcement Report. 

“Due to the loss of product manufacturing records and … product samples, there is no assurance that the product will remain within specification through the labeled expiration date,” the FDA explained.

The recall includes the following products, which were distributed throughout the United States:

  • LidoPatch (lidocaine HCl 3.6%, menthol 1.25%) Pain Relief Patch, packaged in one patch per box (NDC 10882-527-01) and 30 patches per box (NDC 10882-527-02, 10882-527-04), manufactured for JAR Laboratories, from batches 1180103 (Exp. 1/2/21), 180104 (Exp. 1/3/21), 80105 (Exp. 1/4/21), 180106 (Exp. 1/5/21), and 80107 (Exp. 1/6/21);
  • LidoPro (lidocaine 4%, menthol 5%, methyl salicylate 4%) Patch, 15 patches per box (NDC 53225-1023-1), manufactured for Terrain Pharmaceuticals, from batch 170527 (Exp. 5/20);
  • Mencaine (lidocaine 4.5%, menthol 5%) Patch, one patch per pouch (NDC 53225-1090-1), manufactured for Terrain Pharmaceuticals, from batches 170731 (Exp. 7/20) and 180504 (Exp. 5/21); and
  • Maximum Strength Lidocaine Cold and Hot Patch (lidocaine 4%, menthol 1%), five patches per box (NDC 66902-218-05), distributed by CVS Pharmacy Inc., from batches 170614 (Exp. 6/13/20), 180108 (Exp. 1/7/21), 180109 (Exp. 1/8/21), 180110 (Exp. 1/9/21), 180111 (Exp. 1/10/21), 180112 (Exp. 1/11/21), 180113 (Exp. 1/12/21), 180317 (Exp. 3/16/21), and 180318 (Exp.3/17/21).

Wuhan Bingbing Pharmaceutical Co. initiated the recalls May 19, 2020. On May 28, 2020, the FDA designated the recalls Class II, signaling use of the product could cause temporary or medically reversible adverse health consequences. A remote possibility of serious harm also exists.

Lidocaine and menthol patches are available over the counter to ease muscle and joint pain.
