Understanding the Link Between Breast Cancer and Periodontal Disease

Julie Gould

Periodontal disease, a condition affecting the gums and supporting structures of the teeth, has been suggested to be associated with certain types of cancer. A recent review aimed to summarize the relationship between periodontal disease and breast cancer, and provided strategies for the clinical treatment and periodontal health care of breast cancer patients.

To gather relevant information, the researchers conducted a comprehensive search using various databases including PubMed, Google Scholar, and JSTOR. They included systematic reviews, randomized controlled trials, prospective and retrospective clinical studies, case series, and reports in their analysis.

The findings of the review indicate that there is some evidence suggesting a connection between periodontal disease and the occurrence and development of breast cancer. Both conditions share common pathogenic factors. Periodontal disease may contribute to the initiation and progression of breast cancer through mechanisms involving microorganisms and inflammation. Furthermore, the treatment of breast cancer, such as radiotherapy, chemotherapy, and endocrine therapy, can impact periodontal health.

Based on the conclusions drawn from the review, the authors recommend that periodontal therapy for breast cancer patients should be tailored according to the stage of cancer treatment. The use of adjuvant endocrine treatments, like bisphosphonates, can significantly affect oral treatment strategies. Additionally, periodontal therapy can play a role in the primary prevention of breast cancer. Therefore, the oral health care of breast cancer patients deserves attention from clinicians.

In summary, this review provides an overview of the relationship between periodontal disease and breast cancer. It highlights the shared pathogenic factors and the potential impact of cancer treatment on periodontal health.

The review emphasized the importance of individualized periodontal therapy for breast cancer patients and underscores the significance of periodontal health care in the overall management of breast cancer.
