Teen in Critical Condition after Police Use Stun Gun in Mo.

Sept. 15--Independence police used a stun gun and struggled with a teenage driver who then had to be rushed to a hospital Sunday afternoon.

The 17-year-old driver was reported in critical condition.

Police made the traffic stop after 3 p.m. on West Southside Boulevard near Main Street in Independence after the license plate on the car was linked to an outstanding warrant, Independence police said.

The police account said the driver refused to open his window for the officer. A passenger in the car cooperated.

The driver's door was opened, but the driver refused to get out of the car. The officer warned the driver that the he would use a stun gun.

The stun gun was used and the driver was pulled from the car but continued to struggle, police said. The driver was handcuffed and moved off the street.

An ambulance was called as a routine precaution at that time, police said.

However, the driver suffered a "medical emergency," police said, and needed CPR. Police said they did not know what caused the emergency.

The teen was taken to a hospital, where he remained in critical condition Sunday night.

The traffic stop was recorded on police video, and the arrest will be investigated, Sgt. Darrell Schmidli said.
