Bees Attack Students at Texas Middle School
Oct. 21--Four students were transported to a local hospital after a swarm of bees attacked a physical education class at a Saginaw middle school Tuesday morning, officials said.
Twenty students from Highland Middle School, 1001 E. Bailey Boswell Road in Saginaw, were stung by the bees, said MedStar spokesman Matt Zavadsky on Tuesday.
While four were taken to a local hospital, the others were being treated at the scene and were being picked up by their parents, said Eagle Mountain-Saginaw school district spokeswoman Kristin Courtney.
The attack occurred shortly before 11 a.m. Tuesday at the school.
The sixth-grade students were playing soccer when one student apparently stepped on an irrigation valve box where the bees had a hive, Courtney said.
"The bees swarmed out and attacked the students," Courtney said.
The students and teacher hurried back into a school building where nurses and MedStar paramedics began treatment, officials said.
"We have a nurse on campus but others were called from other campuses to help out," Courtney said. "Then MedStar arrived to help out."
Saginaw firefighters also responded to the scene.
A school district exterminator arrived on the scene to take care of the bees, Courtney said.
