An EMS History and Emergency! Tour Through the Los Angeles County Fire Museum

This year marks the 50th anniversary of the premiere of the TV show Emergency!—a show credited with bringing the concept of modern EMS and paramedics to the American public and inspiring a generation of people to become firefighters, EMTs, and paramedics. The show took place in Los Angeles County with the full cooperation of the Los Angeles County Fire Department. The Los Angeles County Fire Museum is in Bellflower, California and has a collection of real EMS equipment from the 1970s; memorabilia, props, and costumes from the show; and the original Squad 51 vehicle, Season 1’s Engine 51 (Crown), Seasons 2–7’s Engine 51 (Ward-LaFrance), and its newest addition, a 1970 Chevrolet Suburban ambulance. All vehicles are operational and fully restored by museum volunteers.

The museum is located at 16400 Bellflower Boulevard in Bellflower. It’s open Wednesday–Saturday from 9 AM–2 PM. The museum website is www.lacountyfiremuseum.com/.
