How I Treat NASH (MASH): Hirsh Trivedi, MD Case Presentation
New Medications Offer New Approaches
Clinicians now have access to new treatments that can help slow or even reverse the progression of metabolic-dysfunction associated steatohepatitis (MASH), formerly called nonalcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH). Glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1) agonists have been shown to help patients lose weight, regulate insulin, and even help to reverse liver fibrosis. A new drug, resmetirom, activates a thyroid hormone receptor to reduce accumulation of fat in and around the liver.
But as Dr Hirsh Trivedi explains, lifestyle changes, such as eating more lean protein and plant foods, exercising 150 minutes per minute, and using resistance training to build and maintain muscle mass, remain vital in the effort to prevent the progression of fatty liver disease and reduce the risk of hepatocellular carcinoma and cirrhosis.
