MindMed Releases Positive Topline Results in Study of LSD Treating Anxiety Disorders
MindMed, clinical stage biopharmaceutical developer of products to treat brain health disorders, has announced Matthias Liechti, MD, PhD, and Friederike Holze, PhD, MindMed collaborators at University Hospital Basel in Basel, Switzerland, have released positive topline data from a Phase II placebo-controlled, investigator-initiated clinical trial to evaluate the use of LSD in the treatment of anxiety disorders.
The researchers’ findings, which were presented May 11 at the PSYCH Symposium in London, show significant, rapid, durable, and beneficial effects of LSD and potential to mitigate anxiety and depression symptoms. LSD treatments produced significant and strong reductions in State-Trait Anxiety Inventory global (STAI-G) scores 16 weeks after treatment. A STAI-G score reduction of at least 30% was observed in 13 of 20 patients who were given LSD vs 9% of those who received a placebo.
Secondary endpoint measurements showed similar rapid and sustained responses that were consistent with a lasting treatment effect on anxiety, depression, and general psychiatric symptomology.
“We are encouraged by the positive data showing that LSD produced rapid, strong, and long-lasting reductions in anxiety and depression symptoms up to 16 weeks post treatment compared with a placebo,” said Miri Halperin Wernli, PhD, executive president of MindMed, said in a news release.
“These results represent the highest-quality research ever conducted with LSD in anxiety disorders and provide contemporary confirmation of the preliminary findings of the anxiolytic and antidepressant effects of LSD in over 500 patients to date.”
